Three moons — silver, red, and black — hanging above the ruins of a monastery and a dead town at night.

Book One — In Progress

Christopher Breen

Dark fantasy forged in the small hours.

Beneath the dead town above Sextons Cross, a demon’s blood still stains the monastery floor where it fell — and a cult of dark magi means to give it back its prince.

The Series

In the Age of Heroes, when the gods still fought beside mortals, a demon prince was gravely wounded and chained through a gateway to Hell — at the cost of both a hero’s life and a great magick user’s. The fallen were laid together in the fabled Tomb of Heroes, while the demon’s blood was left soaking the floor of a monastery beneath Sextons Cross. The stain never came up.

Now a cult of dark magi has come back for what’s left: a soul stone, the demon’s blood locked in the stone floor, and a subject for the vessel. What they found was a thief. All he wanted was the stone — all he got was a voice with dark promises, growing louder inside him, journey after journey.

A prophecy says a hero will rise to hurl the fallen back into Hell — though hero and demon both are running out of sky. Named already, but never explained: the Three Eyes of the Moon.

Everyone is racing the sky.

Where the work stands
The story bible is being drafted by hand, section by section. Book One is planned at one hundred thousand words — the bible comes first, the draft follows.
Already locked in the bible

  • Kharveth — the demon prince, named
  • The Tomb of Heroes
  • The Three Eyes of the Moon
  • The magick law: certainty is armor and doubt is a wound

The crown of Kharveth — knife by knife.

Kharveth

Almost as old as the universe itself, wearing a crown of knives. He walked the mortal lands to wreak havoc once; in the Age of Heroes he was chained and caged in Hell by a magick user’s final sacrifice.

Now he feeds on fear, corruption, and life itself — and from a soul stone in the hands of a tricked thief, he is whispering his way back into the world.

The World

Every caster in this world lives by seven rules. They are not written down anywhere — they are paid.

IThe Source

Magick is a wilful corruption of nature — sometimes necessary, sometimes selfish — and it draws its fuel from life itself.

IIThe Price

Every casting corrupts the caster: the price scales with who they are and the purity of their reason. A good soul casting for an impure reason pays more than an evil soul casting in pure conviction. Pay enough, and you become a slave to the Magick. Even righteousness blights the world — all magick has a price.

IIIThe Road

Corruption travels inward — the soul first, then the physical body, then the mind.

IVThe Undoing

Corruption can be slowed, even reversed — so casters ration their castings, and seek healing wherever it can be found.

VThe Gate

Almost anyone can learn magick. The barriers are finding a teacher, the fear of corruption — and the lands where the law forbids it.

VIThe Bounds

Each caster is bounded by what they are: the balance of good and evil in them, the purity of their intent, their strength and knowledge — and how much of themselves they are willing to sacrifice.

VIIThe Signature

Corrupted magick reeks of rot, decay, and death — and arrives in violence. Clean magick smells of life, and arrives calm and serene.

A gnarled tree split between pale blossom and blackened dead branches under a cold moon.
The withering begins in the surrounding nature and moves inward to the caster, apportioned by the purity of their conviction. The law of magick: certainty is armor and doubt is a wound — and every caster feels the land giving itself up for them.

The Three Eyes of the Moon

Above the waiting dark, the Three Eyes of the Moon are watching — and every eye in the story is turned upward.

The Blessed

A hidden temple, and those born beyond corruption’s price.

“In this world, magick has a price — and the caster is the cost.”

A rule of the Seven Pillars

The Author

Christopher Breen writes dark fantasy in the small hours, after the midnight shift. From St. Catharines, Ontario, he is building a novel series the slow way: a handwritten story bible first, one hundred thousand words of Book One after — because worlds deserve better than shortcuts.

His writing is dark, analytical, and human: the demons are studied, the monsters are deeply personal, and his magick always costs the caster something they meant to keep. He publishes under his own name, because he intends to be remembered for the work.
